September 2008 Update:
We need your help, especially now as we face financial challenges not of our making…

Because of the steady decline of the US dollar we have lost 50% of our purchasing power over the past four years. Brazilian inflation also continues—In the past two months, food alone has increased by 14 percent!

We are also faced with additional cost in complying with Brazilian labour law which requires that when an employee leaves (for whatever reason) they are immediately entitled to 40 percent of all the salary they were paid over the years. This law commits us to paying out large amounts on a monthly basis since we recently reduced our construction staff to the minimum, and have had other staff turnover for various reasons.

In order to ensure the ongoing health of Chain of Love Homes we invite you to help us by:

  • Helping us find more sponsors. We have new children who need sponsors. Anyone can sponsor a child for as little as a dollar a day. Click here for more information
  • Asking your church to put Chain of Love in their yearly budget.

Chain of Love has been blessed with some fantastic Gateway Teams over the years. If you have not yet been on a Gateway team, serving here in Brazil, we invite you to plan to come soon. Let us talk to your church or group about Chain of Love
Chain of Love Founding Directors, Ken and Jerilyn Bayer, will be on home assignment later this year (2008–2009). They would love to visit your church, Bible study group, or ministry team to give you a personal update on the ministry of Chain of Love homes and answer any of your questions. Contact them by email at bayer@sinos.net to arrange a visit.

Projects

Dental —Many children who come to Chain of Love have never used a toothbrush, let alone seen a dentist. Just like in any family, attending to their dental hygiene is at our expense. For example, three boys in House 6 (Jonas, Giovanni, and Juliano) need orthodontic work. The reality of funding restraints are tough: we just cannot afford treatment for them. Here is another real need with a real face: your contributing to our general fund would be greatly appreciated. Status: Ongoing

Fire Safety —To meet local fire code regulations and avoid paying finds we need to have fire extinguishers in each home and build a brick firewall with firedoor in our technical training center. Status: Wall is nearing completion, still in need of fire extinguishers. Fire wall cost is $2000 USD. Cost per extinguisher is $40 USD.

School Materials —Just as you send your children to school each day, please remember that Chain of Love does the same for 90 children. Even if it’s a question of something simple like paper and pens—never mind craft supplies and books—the amounts add up quickly. Would you consider donating funds to our general fund to help us purchase school supplies? Status: Ongoing

Appliance Repair/Replacement —As our campus ages, so do our heavily used appliances which are requiring more and more maintenance. Perhaps you could even help us replace our aging appliances. $750 USD for a washer, $500 USD for a dryer.

Medical Needs —Surgeries, glasses, trips to the doctor, we pay for them all. If you can help us defray these ongoing health costs a gift to our general fund would be most welcome. Status: Ongoing
