Flávia - House 8
Flavia was born August 22, 1992. Of all the coincidences in life, this girl was dedicated at the church as a recent new born. We had been evangelizing in the neighborhood and found this one couple open to the gospel presentation. They came for some time but then dropped out of sight and any followup visits showed them to have lost interest in the gospel. They were an extremely poor family.
Then the mother died of a stroke. The father was left with 5 children to raise, lost his job and had no means of putting any more food on the table. The oldest two already have been through social services as they fled from home continually. The small ones were farmed out to neighbors, and when asked by social services who was watching them, the father could not even give the names of these people.
The father came crying to us to help. We told him that we could only work through social services. He contacted them and we sat down together. The father is going to a distant city to find work and has no relatives or friends who will watch the smaller children.
The first day that Flavia was with us she felt right at home. When she referred to the house father as “uncle”, another of the small children corrected her and said it was “dad”. She readily accepted this. The house parents are Nair and Enaldir. Flávia has made her decision for Christ and has been baptized.
At church she belongs to the adolescent group and enjoys Sunday School. At COL she took the cooking, craft and crossstitch course. She is very responsible and is very helpful watching the new little sister that has come to their house. She takes her and picks her up from school, bathes her and entertains her. She loves children. She also loves her house mom and spends most of her time at home in the kitchen talking to Nair. Pray that she would mature and concentrate more on her studies.
2008 Update: Flavia is fifteen and in grade seven at school. Her future goal is to be a nutritionist. Her work at home is to help with the laundry and cooking. In her spare time she likes to play volleyball and other games with the girls. She is a loving, sweet girl. She goes to Sunday School and has just begun attending the adolescents’ group. She has accepted Christ as her Saviour and been baptized but her spiritual life seems to be at a standstill. Please pray that Flavia would be open to the moving of the Holy Spirit in her life.
2009 Update: Flavia has taken a craft course in sewing flowers and her work is now on display for sale in a local store. She is doing well in school but finds Physics to be her difficult subject. She asks that we pray for her as she makes decisions for her future. She would like to take a teacher training course in a nearby city.
